Porto Boat Tour: The Six Bridges Cruise, Wine Boats and Rabelos
A Porto boat tour is the shortest way to see the city from the water. This guide compares the 50-minute six bridges cruise, the port wine river cruise and the yacht that sails to the Douro mouth, with operator prices, departure points and what each one actually includes. It also covers the rabelo boats that once carried port down the Douro. Day trips up the Douro Valley are a different page, linked below. For what happens on land, the port wine tours in Porto comparison covers cellar visits in Gaia. The bookable tours are compared on Porto port wine tours.

Quick answer The short answer
The classic Porto boat tour is the 50-minute six bridges cruise, which sails under the Dom Luís I, Arrábida, Infante D. Henrique, Maria Pia, São João and Freixo bridges from about €18. If you want wine on board, the 2-hour port wine river cruise costs $62 with 4 tastings. A 2-hour yacht cruise with Vinho Verde costs $62.99.
Key takeaways
- Shortest option: the six bridges cruise, 50 minutes from €18, boarding at Ribeira or the Gaia quay.
- Wine on board: the port wine river cruise with 4 tastings costs $62 for 2 hours.
- To the river mouth: the yacht cruise runs 2 hours for $62.99.
- Day-long cruises up the valley belong to the Douro Valley wine tour from Porto, not this page.
Porto Boat Tours Compared
Several boats cover most requests in Porto: a cheap sightseeing loop, a tasting boat and a yacht. The figures below come from the operators and the booking platforms.
Several Boats, Three Budgets
The six bridges cruise is the city sightseeing option. Operators Tomaz do Douro and Cruzeiros Douro charge €18, and Cruzeiros Douro charges €20 if you board at the Ribeira pier in Porto instead of the Gaia quay. Both run rabelo replicas on a 50-minute loop.
The wine boats cost more and last more than twice as long. The port wine river cruise pours 4 port wines over 2 hours. The yacht swaps port for Vinho Verde and sails past the last bridges to where the Douro meets the sea. Neither boat includes a cellar visit, lunch or hotel pickup.
If your target is the Douro Valley itself, with estates and lunch, see the Douro Valley wine tour from Porto instead. That is a full-day trip by road and river, not a city cruise.

The Six Bridges Cruise
The 50-minute loop is the Porto boat tour most visitors mean. Tomaz do Douro and Cruzeiros Douro run it, and both sail under the same six crossings.
The Six Bridges in Order of the Story They Tell
The route passes Dom Luís I, Arrábida, Infante D. Henrique, Maria Pia, São João and Freixo. The Dom Luís I is the one you will already know from photos, a double-deck iron arch with a 172.5 m main span that was the longest of its type in the world when it opened in 1886. Théophile Seyrig, a partner of Gustave Eiffel, designed it. The Maria Pia upstream of it was also built by Eiffel's firm with Seyrig, opening in 1877 with a 160 m central arch, and it closed to trains in 1991.
Arrábida, downstream, opened in 1963 with a 270 m concrete arch that was the longest of its kind at completion. The Infante D. Henrique followed in 2003 with a 280 m arch. The São João railway bridge replaced the Maria Pia in 1991 and runs 1,140 m. The Freixo, the last on the route, is a 705 m road bridge from 1995.
- Dom Luís I: 1886, iron double-deck arch, 172.5 m main span
- Arrábida: 1963, concrete arch, 270 m main span, 70 m above the river
- Infante D. Henrique: 2003, 280 m arch, 371 m long
- Maria Pia: 1877, Eiffel's firm, 160 m arch, 60 m high
- São João: 1991, railway, 1,140 m long
- Freixo: 1995, road bridge, 705 m and 8 spans
Departure Points and the Route
Cruises board at either Cais da Ribeira on the Porto side or the Gaia quay on the other bank, and the 50-minute loop runs on a rabelo replica between the two banks. Cruzeiros Douro departs every 30 minutes, from 10:00 to 18:00 between April and September and 10:00 to 16:00 from October to March. Tomaz do Douro runs Friday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:30, subject to change, and sails upstream through the historic centre to the Freixo before turning downstream all the way to the Douro mouth.
A guide or audio-guide comes in Portuguese, English, Spanish and French on Cruzeiros Douro. Prices differ by pier: €18 from Gaia and €20 from Ribeira on Cruzeiros Douro, €18 on Tomaz do Douro. For more on the Dom Luís I, see the Ponte Luís I page.

Port and Wine on the Water
Two catalog tours put wine in your hand instead of leaving it on the quay. Neither includes a cellar visit, lunch or hotel pickup.
The Port Wine River Cruise
The port wine river cruise is a shared 2-hour boat tour along Porto and Gaia with tastings of 4 port wines and a certified crew, run by Sailing360_Douro. It costs $62, rates 4.8 from 793 reviews, and offers an afternoon or sunset departure, with music on board. The meeting point is R. da Praia 430 in Vila Nova de Gaia, which is also the return point. Free cancellation runs 24 hours.
The honest detail: the port tasting comes with the cruise, and that is the whole ticket. There are no cellar visits, no food service beyond what the listing states, and no hotel pickup. If you want the lodges themselves, the port wine cellars in Porto guide covers the houses on the Gaia side.
- Price $62 for 2 hours
- 4 port wines included
- Afternoon or sunset departure
- Boarding at R. da Praia 430, Vila Nova de Gaia
The Yacht to the River Mouth
The Porto yacht cruise with wine by Atalaia Gold sails out to the river mouth. It runs 2 hours for $62.99 on a shared yacht of up to 12, and a private option is listed for groups who want the boat alone. The route passes under the bridges of Porto, past Afurada and out to where the Douro meets the sea.
The wine is Vinho Verde, not Port, and snacks are included. The rating sits at 5 from 1,076 reviews. Check-in differs by day: Monday to Friday you report to the Atalaia Gold shop just above the Marina bar, and at weekends you wait next to the Marina bar until the skipper comes to meet you about 3 minutes before the start. Free cancellation runs 24 hours.
Sunset Departures
The port wine river cruise lists an afternoon or sunset departure among its options, which makes it the straightforward choice if golden hour is the point of the trip. Cruises under the six bridges run fixed daytime schedules, with Cruzeiros Douro's last departure at 18:00 in the April to September season and 16:00 from October to March, and Tomaz do Douro operating Friday to Sunday until 18:30. For a private boat, the yacht cruise offers a private option for your group alone on top of the shared 12-seat version.

Rabelo Boats
The boats you board in Porto are replicas of a working vessel that existed nowhere else in the world.
The Boat That Built Gaia
The rabelo is a flat-bottomed wooden cargo boat of the Douro, used to carry Port wine casks from the valley to the lodges in Gaia. The name means little tail, after the long timber steering oar at the stern, worked from a raised platform. Full-size rabelos ran 19-23 m long and carried 40-100 pipes of Port with a crew of up to 12.
The trade had its rules and its dangers. In 1779 legislation capped loads at 70 casks, because the largest boats had been carrying 70-100. Clearing the Cachão da Valeira gorge began in 1780, the first vessels passed in 1789 and the work finished in 1791.
- 19-23 m long, crew of up to 12
- Carried 40-100 pipes of Port
- Named after the tail-like steering oar
- Found only on the Douro
From Cargo to Cruise
The Douro railway reached completion in 1887 and ended the rabelo's monopoly on wine transport. Dams built on the river from 1968 onwards ended navigation of the old rapids altogether. Sources disagree on the last commercial voyage, giving 1964 on one side and 1971 on the other, so the honest answer is that the working era closed in the 1960s or early 1970s.
Today the rabelos belong to the Port houses and sit moored along the Gaia quay as floating advertising. The boats that carry paying passengers are rabelo replicas fitted with modern navigation gear, which is what both six bridges operators sail. Every 24 June, the São João holiday, a rabelo regatta is held on the Douro in Porto, organised by the Port Wine Brotherhood. To connect the boats with the wine they once carried, the what is port wine guide is the background read.
Boat Tour Dos and Don'ts
A little planning keeps the price down.
Do
- Do book direct when it is cheaper, because Cruzeiros Douro gives 10% off online bookings and Tomaz do Douro gives Porto.CARD holders 20% off booking direct.
- Do pick your pier on purpose, because the same 50-minute cruise costs €18 from the Gaia quay and €20 from the Ribeira pier on Cruzeiros Douro.
- Do choose the port wine river cruise at $62 if wine matters, because the listings for the cruise under the six bridges mention no wine.
- Do check the season for your date, because Cruzeiros Douro departs every 30 minutes until 18:00 between April and September but only until 16:00 from October to March.
Don't
- Don't expect a cellar visit from a boat ticket, because the 2-hour port cruise pours 4 port wines and includes no lodge entry.
- Don't confuse the wine boats, because the yacht serves Vinho Verde and snacks at $62.99 while the other serves port at $62.
- Don't book the six bridges cruise expecting the Douro Valley, because the valley is a full-day trip covered by the Douro Valley wine tour from Porto.

Porto Boat Tour FAQ
What is the best boat tour in Porto?
It depends on the purpose. For cheap sightseeing, the 50-minute six bridges cruise from €18 covers the Dom Luís I, Arrábida, Infante D. Henrique, Maria Pia, São João and Freixo bridges. For wine, the port wine river cruise costs $62 for 2 hours with 4 tastings. For the river mouth, the yacht cruise runs 2 hours to the Douro mouth for $62.99.
Is a Porto boat tour worth it?
At the sightseeing level, yes on price: €18 for 50 minutes under six bridges, including a 19th century iron arch with a 172.5 m span, is the lowest-priced boat on this page. If the wine is the draw, book the tasting boats instead, since the six bridges cruise lists no wine.
Which bridges does the six bridges cruise pass under?
The route passes Dom Luís I, Arrábida, Infante D. Henrique, Maria Pia, São João and Freixo. The oldest on the water is the Maria Pia, built by Eiffel's firm and opened in 1877. The comparison table above lists each one's span and year, and the Ponte Luís I page goes deeper on the first bridge.
Where do boat tours in Porto leave from?
Cruises under the six bridges board at either Cais da Ribeira on the Porto side or the Gaia quay on the south bank, and the 50-minute loop is the same either way, only the price differs at €20 versus €18 on Cruzeiros Douro. The port wine river cruise boards at R. da Praia 430 in Vila Nova de Gaia, and the yacht checks in at the Marina bar.
What is the best one-day Douro River cruise from Porto?
That is a different trip from the city boats and it belongs to its own page. The Douro Valley wine tour from Porto is a 10-hour day with 2 wine estates, 6 tastings, lunch and a 50-minute rabelo cruise from Pinhão, from $113.38, rated 4.9 from more than 20,000 reviews. This page covers only cruises that stay in Porto.
Are the cruise boats real rabelo boats?
No, they are rabelo replicas with modern navigation gear. The original rabelos were 19-23 m wooden cargo boats that carried Port casks from the valley to Gaia, and today the survivors sit moored on the Gaia quay as floating advertising for the Port houses. The rabelo history section above gives the timeline.
