Port Wine Lodges Map: Vila Nova de Gaia, House by House
This port wine lodges map shows every port lodge in Vila Nova de Gaia that receives visitors, from the warehouses under the Ponte Luís I to the streets behind the river quay. It tells you which house group runs each lodge, which visits need a booking and which take walk-ins, and how to walk a sensible route between them. For the full breakdown of every single-lodge visit, tasting pours and durations, see the dedicated page on port wine cellars in Porto. For a route that covers several lodges with a guide, the comparison of Porto wine tours on the homepage lists entry prices, group sizes and what each ticket includes. Use this page to place the lodges, then decide which doors to knock on.

Quick answer The lodges at a glance
Taylor's, founded in 1692, has the earliest founding year stated on this port wine lodges map, and it sits at Rua do Choupelo 250 in Vila Nova de Gaia. Around fifteen port houses in Vila Nova de Gaia receive visitors. Most sit in two bands: a riverside strip along Avenida Diogo Leite and Cais de Gaia, and a second band on the streets behind it. Three big groups run most of the famous names: Sogrape, the Kopke Group and Symington Family Estates, with the Fladgate Partnership on Rua do Choupelo.
Key takeaways
- Burmester, Kopke, Cálem, Ferreira, Sandeman and Ramos Pinto have addresses in the central Gaia cluster near the Ponte Luís I. See the layout of the lodges.
- Taylor's, Fonseca and WOW sit on Rua do Choupelo, and Graham's sits in western Gaia. See who owns which lodge.
- Real Companhia Velha stands in eastern Gaia and Poças is about 1.2 km from the river, so plan those as separate trips or take a guided walk such as the Port Wine Lodges Tour with 7 tastings.
- For tasting pours, durations and prices of each visit, the detail lives on the port wine cellars page, this page is the map.

How the Lodges Are Laid Out
Gaia's port lodges fall into four zones. Knowing the zone tells you how far you will walk and if you can drop in.
The Riverside Strip Along the Lower Deck
Cross the Dom Luís I bridge on the lower deck and you land in the middle of the old port quarter. The bridge, built between 1881 and 1886, is a double-deck iron arch: the upper deck carries metro line D and pedestrians, the lower deck carries public transport and pedestrians too. Burmester stands at Largo Ponte Luiz I, literally under the bottom deck, and opens 10:00-13:00 and 14:00-19:00. From there the addresses run along Avenida Diogo Leite, the quay road. Kopke keeps a tasting room and shop on Avenida de Diogo Leite, open daily 10:00-19:00, and Cálem is at number 344, open daily 10:00-19:00. Both take walk-ins and bookings.
Ferreira sits at Av. Ramos Pinto 70, and the Ramos Pinto visitor centre is on the same street, where walk-in tastings run daily 10:00-18:00 with no reservation needed. The guided visits there are ticketed: Classic Tasting €20, Prestige €30 and Heritage €50 on the Ramos Pinto official page.
The Cais de Gaia End and the Serra Side
The second cluster sits around Largo Miguel Bombarda. Sandeman is at Largo Miguel Bombarda 47, open daily 10:00-12:30 and 14:00-18:00, and Espaço Porto Cruz shares the same square at number 23, with a boutique, tasting room, restaurant and a 360-degree terrace. Sandeman requires a booking made online through Sogrape, so a walk-in is not a safe plan there.
The Gaia cable car connects this zone to the top of the hill at Jardim do Morro: the upper station stands next to Jardim do Morro metro station at the Gaia end of the bridge's upper deck, and the lower station is at Cais de Gaia. A ride takes 3 min 45 s. An adult one-way ticket costs €7, a child aged 5-12 pays €3.50, the adult round trip is €10, and a family ticket for 2 adults and 2 children costs €22.50 round trip.
Andante transit tickets are not valid on the cable car.
The Streets Behind the Quay: Rua do Choupelo and Westward
Rua do Choupelo holds three addresses. Fonseca is listed at number 84, where the audio tour runs 11:00-17:45 and walk-ins are fine unless your group tops 15 or you want a Fado dinner. WOW Porto is at number 39, a museum quarter rather than a working lodge, open 10:00-19:00 with a Day Pass and a combined Day Pass plus Fonseca cellar tour. Taylor's is at number 250, with the cellar open 10:00-18:15 and the tasting room until 19:30, and no advance booking needed. Taylor's dates to 1692, the earliest founding year stated on this map of the port wine lodges.
Two more working lodges belong to Symington Family Estates. Graham's 1890 Lodge, in western Gaia, is listed at Rua Rei Ramiro 514, with car access at Rua do Agro 141, and visits need reservations. Cockburn's is at Rua Serpa Pinto 346, visits last about 1.5 hours and run 10:00-17:30 from April to October and 10:00-17:00 from November to March, and the lodge admits only guests with reservations.
Outliers: Eastern Gaia and Inland
Some lodges fall outside the riverside frame. Real Companhia Velha, founded by royal charter on 10 September 1756, stands at Rua Azevedo Magalhães 314 in the Oliveira do Douro area of eastern Gaia, outside the riverfront strip, and takes tours Monday to Saturday, confirmed on deposit or payment. Its on-site Enoteca 17.56 serves lunch.
Poças, founded in 1918 and family-owned, sits roughly 1.2 km from the river, and recommends booking through its online system. Churchill's Lodge requires booking and has a 1982 Bar in the garden. Its street address and hours are not confirmed in the sources.
Quevedo Lodge runs a wine bar and tasting room on the Gaia riverfront, with live Fado Monday, Wednesday and Friday 15:00-17:00, but its street address is not confirmed.
One Lodge That Is Not in Gaia at All
The IVDP, the institute that regulates port and Douro wines, keeps its visitor centre on the Porto side of the river at Rua Ferreira Borges 27 in the Ribeira quarter. It combines the Port and Douro Interactive Learning Centre, a tour of the laboratories and tasting chamber, and a self-service Port Wine Bar with eight ports chosen by magnetic card. The Porto shop and tasting room run 10:00-19:30, and its shop page says it closes on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, though the learning-centre page lists no exclusions, so check before a weekend visit.
The bar itself is walk-in, tours are booked separately, and no prices are listed on the institute's page. Put it at the start or end of a lodge day, since you cross the river anyway.

Who Owns Which Lodge
Group ownership explains why some lodges share booking systems, styles and house philosophies. The table lists each lodge that receives visitors, its group where the sources state one, its founding year where confirmed, and if you must book.
The Lodge Table
Figures and rules below come from each lodge's own pages and the group booking sites. Where a founding year or a group is not stated on those pages, the cell says so. For tasting lists, durations and ticket prices for every visit, follow the links to the port wine cellars comparison rather than this table.

What the Groups Mean for a Visitor
Four groups control ten of the named lodges, and that shapes the day. The Fladgate Partnership runs Taylor's from 1692, Fonseca from 1815 and the WOW museum quarter at number 39, all on Rua do Choupelo. Taylor's and Fonseca take walk-ins, which makes this the easiest cluster for an unplanned visit. Symington Family Estates owns Graham's 1890 Lodge and Cockburn's, and both are reservation-only working lodges, so reserve these two ahead. Sogrape runs Sandeman and Ferreira, also booking-only. The Kopke Group, formerly Sogevinus, holds the strongest riverside run: Burmester under the bridge, plus Kopke and Cálem on Avenida Diogo Leite. Cálem, founded 1859, calls itself the most visited port cellar in the world.
Real Companhia Velha, founded 1756, Poças, founded 1918, Ramos Pinto, founded 1880, Churchill's and Quevedo are listed without a group because the sources read do not name one. One practical note: if you want the guide-led version of several lodges in one go, the Port Wine Lodges Walking Tour with 7 tastings covers three port houses in 3.5-4 hours with entry tickets included, and the Port and Douro Wine Tasting Tour covers three Gaia lodges with 9 tastings in 3 hours from a meeting point at Avenida Diogo Leite 135, right on the riverside strip.
Booking Rules in Practice
The map divides into three booking behaviours. Walk-ins work at Taylor's, Fonseca, the Kopke tasting room and the Ramos Pinto visitor centre, which pours tastings daily 10:00-18:00 without reservations. Booking is mandatory at Sandeman, Ferreira, Graham's, Cockburn's, Burmester, Churchill's and Real Companhia Velha.
The rest take both. Hours differ from lodge to lodge: Taylor's cellar closes at 18:15 and its tasting room at 19:30, while Cálem and Kopke run to 19:00 and Fonseca's audio tour runs until 17:45.
A Walking Route Between the Lodges
This route links the lower deck of the Ponte Luís I to the streets behind the quay in seven stops. Distances and walking times between stops are not stated in the sources, so judge pace on the day.
Seven Stops From the Bridge to the Back Streets
The order follows the addresses, starting at the bridge and moving outward.
- Start at the Gaia end of the Dom Luís I bridge, built 1881-1886. The lower deck carries pedestrians and public transport.
- Stop 1: Burmester, Largo Ponte Luiz I, founded 1750, literally under the bottom deck. Booking required, open 10:00-13:00 and 14:00-19:00.
- Stop 2: Kopke, Avenida de Diogo Leite. A walk-in tasting room and shop in a century-old warehouse, open daily 10:00-19:00, no booking needed.
- Stop 3: Cálem, Avenida Diogo Leite 344, founded 1859. A guided tour with an interactive museum and tasting, open daily 10:00-19:00, walk-in or booked. Details on the Cálem cellar tour page.
- Stop 4: Ramos Pinto Visitor Centre, Av. Ramos Pinto, founded 1880. Walk-in tastings daily 10:00-18:00. Ticketed visits cost €20 for the Classic Tasting, €30 for Prestige and €50 for Heritage.
- Stop 5: Sandeman, Largo Miguel Bombarda 47, with Espaço Porto Cruz and its 360-degree terrace at number 23 on the same square. Sandeman needs an online booking through Sogrape, open daily 10:00-12:30 and 14:00-18:00.
- Stop 6: Leave the quay for Rua do Choupelo. Fonseca, listed at number 84, founded 1815, walk-in audio tour 11:00-17:45, then WOW Porto at number 39, open 10:00-19:00, then Taylor's at number 250, founded 1692, cellar 10:00-18:15 and tasting room to 19:30, no booking needed.
- Stop 7, optional extension: Graham's 1890 Lodge, Rua Rei Ramiro 514 with car access at Rua do Agro 141, reservation only, or Cockburn's at Rua Serpa Pinto 346, also reservation only.
Shortcuts and the Way Back
If the full route on foot sounds like too much, the Gaia cable car links Cais de Gaia to Jardim do Morro in 3 min 45 s. An adult one-way ticket costs €7, the round trip €10, a child aged 5-12 pays €3.50 one-way or €5 return, and a family round trip is €22.50. The upper station sits next to Jardim do Morro metro station at the Gaia end of the bridge's upper deck, where metro line D crosses. Cable car hours change with the season: 10:00-20:00 from 26 April to 24 September, 10:00-19:00 in the shoulder seasons either side, and 10:00-18:00 from late October to late March, closing only on Christmas Day.
Prefer someone else to do the navigation? A guided option covers several lodges in one booking. The Port Wine Lodges Tour including 7 port wine tastings meets on Porto's riverside by the old Pensil bridge pillars, lasts 3.5-4 hours and includes entry to three port houses with 7 tastings, though lunch, hotel pickup and food are not included. For tastings without cellar walls, the Port Wine River Cruise with 4 tastings passes the whole quay from the water in 2 hours and departs from R. da Praia 430 in Gaia. And if the Douro itself is the goal rather than the lodges, the Douro Valley wine tour with lunch and river cruise runs 10 hours with 6 tastings and hotel pickup available. Full visit-by-visit detail for every lodge stays on the port wine cellars page.
